Angie Schmitt: Right of Way
Introductie
In her book Right of Way, journalist Angie Schmitt shows us that road deaths are not inevitable “accidents". They don't happen as a result of jaywalking or distracted walking. They are predictable, occurring in stark geographic patterns that tell a story of systemic inequality. These deaths are the forgotten faces of an increasingly urgent public health crisis that we can solve, but do not want to solve.
[NL] In haar boek Right of Way laat journaliste Angie Schmitt ons zien dat sterfgevallen in het verkeer geen onvermijdelijke "ongelukken" zijn. Ze gebeuren niet als gevolg van jaywalking of afgeleid lopen. Ze zijn voorspelbaar, komen voor in grimmige geografische patronen die een verhaal vertellen over systemische ongelijkheid. Deze sterfgevallen zijn de vergeten gezichten van een steeds urgenter wordende crisis in de volksgezondheid, die we wel kunnen oplossen, maar niet willen oplossen.
Schmitt is investigating the possible causes of the increase in pedestrian deaths in the United States, as well as programs and movements that are beginning to respond to this “epidemic”. Her research reveals why pedestrians die - and she demands action. Right of Way is a call to redefine the problem, recognise the role of racism and classism in the public response to these deaths, and a plea for road safety. Ultimately, Schmitt argues that we need improvements in infrastructure and policy changes to save lives.
[NL] Schmitt onderzoekt de mogelijke oorzaken van de toename van het aantal voetgangersdoden in de Verenigde Staten, evenals programma's en bewegingen die beginnen te reageren op deze “epidemie”. Haar onderzoek onthult waarom voetgangers sterven - en ze eist actie. Right of Way is een oproep om het probleem te herdefiniëren, de rol van racisme en klassisme in de publieke respons op deze sterfgevallen te erkennen, en een pleidooi voor verkeersveiligheid. Right of Way reveals a crisis rooted in both inequality and the rampant rule of the automobile in American cities. It challenges us to invent and demand safer and fairer cities, where no one can be replaced.

Beyond Zero Lectures
Het Andere Atelier is organizing three lectures in 2021 around important urban themes beyond road safety. The ambition is to move towards a 'Beyond Zero', a traffic-safe, inclusive, climate-neutral, healthy and vibrant city on a human scale.
[NL] Het Andere Atelier organiseert in 2021 extra lezingen om het debat rond belangrijke stedelijke thema's te blijven aanzwengelen. Met het nieuwe programma gaat het Andere Atelier ruimer dan het thema verkeersveiligheid. De ambitie is immers 'Beyond Zero' en dat betekent dat een verkeersveilige stad ook een inclusieve, klimaatneutrale, gezonde en levendige stad is op mensenmaat.

Wiet Vandaele is an urban planner for the city of Leuven. He is active for Heroes for Zero, a civilian group that stands up for zero road deaths and zero serious injuries in the streets of Brussels. Wiet is co-author of the paper 'Equity in the Vision Zero'.
[NL] Wiet Vandaele is ruimtelijk planner voor de stad Leuven. Hij is actief voor Heroes voor Zero, een burgergroep die opkomt voor nul verkeersdoden en nul zwaargewonden in de Brusselse straten. Wiet is medeauteur van de position paper Equity in the vision zero.
Els De Vos, ir.-architect and urban planner, teaches at the Faculty of Design Sciences of the University of Antwerp in the field of residential culture and architectural history and theory. She studied the perception and meaning of public spaces from a gender and diversity perspective and recently curated an exhibition on female representation in public space (for Amazone in Brussels).
[NL] Els De Vos, ir.-architect en ruimtelijke planner, doceert aan de faculteit Ontwerpwetenschappen van de Universiteit Antwerpen in het veld van wooncultuur en architectuurgeschiedenis en –theorie. Ze bestudeerde de beleving en betekenisgeving van publieke ruimten vanuit een gender- en diversiteitsperspectief en cureerde recent een tentoonstelling over de vrouwelijke representatie in de publieke ruimte (voor Amazone te Brussel).
Soumaya Majdoub is the founder of Women In Urbanism and a columnist for Samenleving & Politiek. She is a doctoral researcher within the broader interdisciplinary research project ‘Cities & Newcomers’ at the VUB’s Brussels Centre for Urban Studies and Interface Demography. Furthermore, she is a policy advisor on Circular Economy in Cities and certified in Resilience Coaching for companies and organizations to identify profitable opportunities for their activities by integrating sustainability and circularity.
[NL] Soumaya Majdoub is de oprichtster van Women In Urbanism en columniste voor Samenleving & Politiek. Ze is doctoraatsonderzoeker binnen het bredere interdisciplinaire onderzoeksproject 'Steden & Nieuwkomers' aan het Brussels Centrum voor Stadsstudies en Interfacedemografie van de VUB. Verder is zij beleidsadviseur Circulaire Economie in Steden en gecertificeerd in Resilience Coaching voor bedrijven en organisaties om winstgevende kansen voor hun activiteiten te identificeren door duurzaamheid en circulariteit te integreren.
